The Perfect 2 Day Trip from Chandigarh by Green Cottage BnB

Chandigarh is one of the best placed cities in North India for a short break. Within 100 kilometres you have hill stations, Mughal gardens, forest lakes and colonial era towns, which means a two day trip here covers far more ground than most weekend escapes.

The mistake most people make is compressing it into a single day. You end up spending five hours in the car and twenty minutes at each stop. Splitting it across two days, with one night somewhere quiet, changes the whole experience.

Here is an itinerary that actually works.

Day 1: Panchkula, temples and gardens

Morning: Mata Mansa Devi Temple

Start early. The temple complex sits across roughly 100 acres at the foot of the Shivaliks, and it is at its calmest before mid morning. Allow an hour and a half.

Our full Mansa Devi Panchkula guide covers timings, how to reach it and what to expect.

Late morning: Cactus Garden, Panchkula Sector 5

Ten minutes away, and completely different in character. One of Asia's largest collections of cacti and succulents, spread across landscaped grounds and greenhouses. About an hour, and excellent for photographs.

Afternoon: Pinjore Gardens

Roughly 20 km on, a terraced Mughal era garden descending across multiple levels with water channels and pavilions. Late afternoon light is the best time to see it, and the gardens are lit in the evening.

Evening: settle in

Rather than driving back into Chandigarh traffic, stay in Panchkula. You are already at the edge of the hills, which puts you in position for an early start tomorrow.

This is the decision that makes the whole itinerary work. See where to stay.

Day 2: The hills

Option A: Morni Hills, best for nature and quiet

Leave after breakfast. Morni is roughly 35 km from Panchkula, about 1.5 hours through the Shivalik foothills. Spend the morning at the Tikkar Taal twin lakes, walk up to the remains of the old fort for the views, and take one of the forest trails.

Morni is Haryana's only real hill station at around 1,267 metres, and on a weekday it is genuinely peaceful. Back by evening.

Our complete Morni Hills guide has the route and seasonal detail.

Option B: Kasauli, best for a classic hill town

About 55 km from Panchkula, roughly a 1.5 to 2 hour drive into Himachal. A quiet colonial era town with pine forest, walking trails, a church and a mall road. Well suited to a slow morning and a long lunch.

Option C: Timber Trail, Parwanoo, best with kids or limited time

Closest of the three at roughly 25 km. The cable car across the valley is the main draw and takes little time to organise, which makes it the easiest option if you are driving back to Delhi or Punjab the same evening.

If you have a third day

Add Chhatbir Zoo near Zirakpur, one of the largest zoological parks in the region, or spend a slower morning in Chandigarh itself at the Rock Garden and Sukhna Lake before driving home.

Practical notes

Best season: October to March. Clear weather, comfortable temperatures, best hill visibility. Monsoon is beautiful but hill roads get difficult.

Driving: the hill roads to Morni and Kasauli are narrow with tight turns. Drive them in daylight, particularly the first time.

Weekends: everything is busier on Saturday and Sunday. If you have flexibility, a Friday to Saturday or Sunday to Monday trip is noticeably more relaxed.

Where to base yourself: Panchkula rather than central Chandigarh. It is closer to every hill destination on this list, quieter at night, and better value.

Where to stay overnight

The overnight stop is what makes this itinerary work, and a standard hotel room is not really the point of a trip like this.

Green Cottage runs seven private villas across Panchkula and MDC Chandigarh. Each is a private property rather than a hotel room, with its own lawn or terrace, parking and a full kitchen.

Browse all seven on our villa collection, or see the gallery.
